Gas Burner Won't Ignite

When a gas burner clicks but won't light, or doesn't click at all, several issues could be responsible.

Common Symptoms

You may be experiencing one or more of these issues:

  • Clicking but no flame
  • No clicking at all
  • Delayed ignition
  • Flame lights then goes out
  • Only some burners won't light
  • Clicking continues after flame lights
  • Weak or uneven flame

Possible Causes

Wet Igniter

common

Moisture from cleaning prevents proper sparking.

How to check: Did you recently clean the cooktop? Igniter may need to dry completely.

Clogged Burner Ports

common

Food debris blocks gas flow through the burner head.

How to check: Look closely at burner ports for visible blockage.

Misaligned Burner Cap

common

The burner cap isn't seated properly, preventing even gas distribution.

How to check: Remove and reseat the burner cap, ensuring it sits level.

Igniter Failure

moderate

The spark igniter has worn out or been damaged.

How to check: Watch for spark when turning knob. No spark indicates igniter issue.

Gas Valve Problem

moderate

The valve controlling gas flow to the burner isn't opening.

How to check: If you don't smell any gas when the burner is on (with no flame), valve may be stuck.

Control Module Issue

rare

The electronic control that times the spark has failed.

How to check: If all burners have the same problem, it may be the control module.

DIY Troubleshooting Steps

Always unplug electrical appliances or turn off gas before troubleshooting. Safety first!
  1. 1

    Dry the Igniter

If recently cleaned, wait for the igniter to dry completely, or use a hair dryer on cool/low setting.

Never use high heat near gas components.
  2. 2

    Check Burner Cap Alignment

Remove the burner cap and reseat it carefully. It should sit flat and level.

  3. 3

    Clean Burner Ports

Use a straight pin or needle to clear each burner port. Never use a toothpick as it can break off inside.

Be gentle - don't enlarge the ports.
  4. 4

    Clean the Igniter

Gently clean the igniter electrode with a soft brush. Remove any grease or debris.

Don't bend or damage the igniter.
  5. 5

    Test Other Burners

If one burner lights, use it to light the problem burner. This rules out gas supply issues.

    Be careful when lighting manually.
